More than likely you’ve either read about this game already, or have even played it yourself. Though, this game is a big influence behind this weekly series, so I couldn’t resist including the title. Today, I want to talk a bit about the awe-inspiring Abobo’s Big Adventure.
Upon loading Abobo’s Big Adventure you can immediately tell that it is a passion project. This game took 10 years to develop and the quality certainly shows. If you’re not familiar with Abobo’s Big Adventure, it is a parody game that pays tribute to the good old days of blowing into NES cartridges and soaking in the ambient lighting of your glass tube television. Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Mega Man, Double Dragon and almost any classic NES title that you can think of is included in this game. So, how does this all come together?
all the games listed above, and more, have levels built using mechanics from that game. The best example would have to be the stellar Zelda level. You play through as Abobo and advance through a dungeon just like you would in a Zelda game. Another great example is the Double Dragon level; just picture the first level from Double Dragon, but instead you get to be Abobo, and that’s just plain awesome. Not only do levels play like the respective NES game that they are modeled after, but there are some awesome boss fights. Again, the Zelda level stands out as a good example. Hint: It’s not only dangerous to go alone, but it’s dangerous being Abobo.
Abobo’s Big Adventure is an extremely easy to play game with controls similar to those you would fine in NES games. You will be using the arrow keys and the A/S keys to control Abobo. His actions are specific (and normally unique) to each level. This obviously provides a killer amount of variety, but is never too hard to learn.
Abobo’s Big Adventure is also chock full of secrets, most of which will unlock certain achievements. Yes, this game has achievements as well and plenty of them. Those that have played Double Dragon in the past may be tempted to try an old glitch. You may be surprised to learn that it is programmed into Abobo’s Big Adventure, but the results are shocking; seriously, not for the weak of heart.
Honestly, this is one of the most well put together flash games to hit the Internet. It oozes charm around every corner, especially when there are nostalgic sprites in play. Though most of the sprites are familiar, there is plenty of original art to be found as well. Of course, when you’re talking about charm and nostalgic NES games, you tend to think of chiptune masterpieces. Yeah, they are in here as well.
If you are a retro nut like me then you will love this throwback to the old days. It is flawlessly executed and stands as one of the highest quality flash games to ever be created. If you’re bored and looking for something that rivals the quality found in console games, Abobo’s Big Adventure could just be you’re tool to become boredom free.
