Announced during today’s Nintendo Direct video, Nintendo confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog would be returning to the Super Smash Bros. series in the upcoming Wii U and Nintendo 3DS installments. Not much is known about the hedgehog’s return, but I think it’s safe to say the action is going to receive a boost in speed.

Three new power-ups were introduced in today’s trailer:

Red = Eagle: When Sonic grabs the red wisp, he turns into an eagle and gains the power to fly around the stage.

Purple = Asteroid: After grabbing the purple wisp, Sonic turns into an asteroid that can float and destroy things on contact.

Pink: Grab the pink wisp and you have to master the beat and rhythm to hop across portions of the stage.

Sonic Lost World will be released on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS on October 22nd, 2013.

IGN has just posted an exclusive Sonic: Lost World Debut Trailer, and things are looking good for the hedgehog. This trailer mixes cut-scenes and gameplay, showcasing a brand new experience for Sonic the Hedgehog fans. It looks like Nintendo may have some influence over this title, as the worlds look similiar to those in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D Land, of course, the game is also reminiscent of the cancelled Sonic X-treme.

This list was initially created to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The idea was to go through each Sonic game and pick out my favourite zones. Well, last year I played through 52 zones spanning the classic Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, and Sega CD games. Out of those 52 zones, I managed to narrow this list down to 20. It was grueling to replay each game, but now I can proudly present you the Top 20 Sonic the Hedgehog Zones

20 – Jungle Zone – Sonic the Hedgehog (Master System)

This is a great zone for many reasons. First, it has an incredibly upbeat song worthy of any Sonic game; however, the jungle setting is its real strength. Sega was able to include many neat obstacles for Sonic to overcome in this zone, such as rolling logs, vines, and even waterfalls. My favourite aspect of this Zone is climbing the gigantic waterfall in Act 2. It’s a standout stage because it offers great platforming during your vertical ascent. Yes, this is a change of pace for Sonic, but the design is honestly a lot of fun and challenging, not to mention the cool waterfall backdrop. Sonic even fights Robotnik high above the jungle, which is also a nice touch. Read more

Many of the games that hit the Game Gear back in the day were actually just ports of a Sega Master System game and the Sonic franchise was one of the worst offenders. However, Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble was a game crafted specifically for the Game Gear. It was released shortly after Sonic and Knuckles and actually has a similar story. Read more

Sega was quick to market both of these things to the gaming consumer. In doing so, Sega was able to create a franchise that is still beloved by fans many years later. Read more
